      Here is some story about this painting of Waterhouse - Circe offering the Cup to Ulysses.In the Greek epic story The Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus (Ulysses) the king of Ithaca returns to Greece, victorious from the Trojan Wars. Unfortunately he offends the sea God Poseidon by killing his son the Cyclops and is condemned to wander the oceans for years. Odysseus and his crew land on the Island of Aeolia, inhabited by Circe, a beautiful sorceress and the daughter of the sun who turns his crew into swine by giving them enchanted wine. Odysseus is warned by one of his men who escaped her enchantments and he goes to confront her. Circe offers Odysseus a cup of enchanted wine but Odysseus is armed with moly, a herb given to him by the Gods and her spells have no effect on him. She then releases his crew from her spells and helps Odysseus by warning him of the dangers he will encounter on his journey home.
