      The Roman ladies in the foreground of Love's Votaries are highly proper (and look a shade bored) compared to their Greek sisters in the bas relief behind, who have collapsed into a crazy pile of limbs and torsos following a wild dance... or worse. The marble relief is brilliantly rendered as usual; indeed this picture may be read as a metaphor for Alma Tadema's work as a whole: Alma Tadema often seemed able to draw more emotion from marble than people.
