      Leader’s early paintings show some Pre-Raphaelite influence, but he later developed a broader, more naturalistic style, which was enormously successful. His best known painting "February Fill-Dyke" (Birmingham Art Gallery), as well as the one you see above - An English River in Autumn, 1877 ,reflect the manner of painting rejected by the impressionists but which has proved much in demand.
